Sitting high on a quartzite crag of the Serra de São Mamede, Marvão is a walled hilltop village in Portugal's Alto Alentejo whose name traces back to Ibn Marwan, the 8th-century ruler who built its castle as the seat of an independent statelet. The castle and medieval walls were reinforced under Sancho II and Denis of Portugal, and the village today hosts an international classical music festival each July, a film festival in August, and a Chestnut Festival each November.
