Mavrochori

This pocket-sized village on the eastern shore of Lake Orestiada in Macedonia, Mavrochori sits directly on the water across from the town of Kastoria. The Monastery of Panagia Mavriotissa, built in 1083 by General George Palaiologos to mark a victory over the Normans, stands here, and the village hosts festive events around the Assumption of Mary each August. A nautical club operates on the lake, and mountains rise in the surrounding area.
