A modest port town on the Mejillones Peninsula in northern Chile, flanked by the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Atacama Desert to the east, marking the country's widest point along a parallel. Nearby Punta Angamos was the site of a naval battle during the War of the Pacific (1879–1883). The town's name derives from the mussel species that once formed a staple food for the region's indigenous inhabitants and still abounds along the northern Chilean coast.
