A gateway city for Meru National Park and the wildlife reserves of Samburu, Buffalo Springs, and Lewa Downs, this Kenyan city sits on the northeastern slopes of Mount Kenya, close to the equator and well above sea level. The surrounding county is Kenya's main growing region for miraa (khat) and produces coffee twice yearly due to its distinct highland climate. The Meru National Museum is in the city centre, and the wider region is ringed by UNESCO-listed sites.
