The Fu River (Fujiang) runs through the heart of this large city in northern Sichuan, China's second-largest prefecture-level city in the province and the country's sole designated "science city," a status approved by China's State Council. Historically known as Fuzhou and Mianzhou since the Western Han dynasty, Mianyang sits at the northwestern edge of the Sichuan Basin, with the Longmen and Minshan mountain ranges to the northwest and a short distance from Chengdu.
