Mitla's pre-Hispanic archaeological ruins — built by the Zapotecs and later occupied by the Mixtecs, and known to the Aztecs as Mictlán, "land of the dead" — make this compact Oaxacan town one of the more significant ancient sites in southern Mexico. The town is also known for handcrafted embroidered textiles and mezcal, and sits within easy reach of the city of Oaxaca and several UNESCO World Heritage sites in the wider region.
