Mogadishu, known locally as Xamar, is the capital and largest city of Somalia, with a history stretching back over a thousand years as a major Indian Ocean trading port. It served as the capital of the Sultanate of Mogadishu from the 9th to the 13th century and reached its peak prosperity in the 14th and 15th centuries as one of East Africa's wealthiest coastal cities. After decades of civil war, significant reconstruction has been underway since the late 2010s.
