The 19th-century winter estate of Agush Agha, a wealthy Ottoman feudal lord, is the main draw in this Rhodope Mountains village in southernmost Bulgaria. Built between 1825 and 1872 by local Bulgarian craftsmen, the castle-like Agushevi Konatsi complex comprises three buildings enclosed by a common wall with a richly decorated tower, and counts 221 windows, 86 doors, and 24 chimneys. The estate sits near the banks of the river Arda, and the surrounding area holds around twenty caves, including Uhlovitsa, which features underground lakes and water cascades.
