One of the last purely Creole settlements in Belize, Monkey River Town sits at the mouth of the Monkey River on the Caribbean Sea in the Toledo District. The tiny hamlet's main draws are river trips to see howler monkeys and other wildlife, and fishing. Traditional Creole practices survive here, including cooking over the fire hearth. A road connects the village to the Southern Highway, though much travel remains by sea.
