Founded in 1840 by the Portuguese colonial administration, Mossamedes is a coastal city in southwestern Angola and the capital of Namibe Province, set where the Namib Desert meets the Atlantic. Mountains are visible from the city, and the waterfront is within walking distance of the centre. The city also functions as one of Angola's major logistics hubs, with a port, railway, airport, and road connections converging here. It was known as Namibe between 1985 and 2016.
