Mrauk U, in northern Rakhine State, was the capital of the Mrauk U Kingdom from 1430 until 1785 — the largest and most powerful Rakhine kingdom in history — and the town remains dense with archaeological sites from that era. Set east of the Kaladan River and flanked by hills to the north and south, it holds cultural significance for the Rakhine people and draws independent travellers to its medieval temples and compact centre.
