Nahavand, a city in Iran's Hamadan province, is best known as the site of the Battle of Nahavand, the decisive 7th-century engagement during the Muslim conquest of Persia. Continuously inhabited since prehistoric times, it served as a seat of the Sasanian-era House of Karen. The city sits close to mountains and near water, with UNESCO World Heritage sites in the wider region.
