Nanyang, in southwest Henan Province, is a large Chinese city historically associated with four celebrated figures: Zhang Heng ("sage of science"), Zhang Zhongjing ("sage of medicine"), Fan Li ("sage of commerce"), and Zhuge Liang ("sage of intelligence"). The city also sits at the headwaters of the Han River system, surrounded on three sides by mountain ranges including the Qinling and Funiu mountains, and serves as the site of the Taocha Canal head for China's South-to-North Water Diversion project.
