Naryn
Kyrgyzstan
Founded as a fortress on a caravan route in 1868, Naryn is a pocket-sized regional town in central Kyrgyzstan set along both banks of the Naryn River, which cuts a gorge through the centre. The surrounding mountains make it a practical base for exploring highland terrain, and the river connects downstream to the Syr Darya. Two regional museums serve visitors, though the town is otherwise largely residential.
