The closest major city to the ruins of ancient Ur, Nasiriyah sits on the lower Euphrates in southern Iraq and serves as the gateway to one of the most significant archaeological sites in the world. The city museum holds a large collection of Sumerian, Assyrian, Babylonian, and Abbasid artifacts, and the ruins of Larsa are also nearby. Founded by the Muntafiq tribe in the late 19th century during the Ottoman period, the city is a centre for date cultivation, boat-building, carpentry, and silver working.
