England's largest fishing port sits on the shore of Mount's Bay in south-west Cornwall, where Newlyn's medieval quay — long a subject for the Newlyn School painters of the 1880s, including Stanhope Forbes, Harold Harvey, and Henry Scott Tuke — remains intact. The harbour mixes working fishing vessels with pleasure boats, and the town has a solid spread of pubs and restaurants. The Newlyn Gallery holds a collection of modern art, while a broader collection of Newlyn School work is at Penlee House Gallery and Museum in neighbouring Penzance. The Mayflower stopped here in 1620 at the start of its Atlantic crossing, and Spanish forces burned the town in 1595.
