The capital of Cameroon's Adamawa Region, Ngaoundéré sits on a plateau named for the nearby "navel mountain" — the Mbum-language origin of the city's name. The Lamido Palace and Lamido Grand Mosque are the main historic draws, and the city serves as the northern terminus of the railway from Yaoundé. Lake Tison lies close by, with mountain terrain in the surrounding area.
