The administrative headquarters of Nilphamari District in Bangladesh's Rangpur Division, this northern city carries an unusual concentration of churches for its size alongside a small central core with cafés and restaurants. Founded in 1875 on the bank of the Bamondanga River, it served as the capital of indigo planters during the British era and is today a commercial hub for the surrounding districts, connected to Dhaka, Khulna, and Rajshahi by intercity rail.
