The original San Juan Parangaricutiro was buried under ash and lava when the Parícutin volcano erupted in 1943, and the top of its church still protrudes from the volcanic deposits — one of the more striking sights in Michoacán. The town was rebuilt nearby and is sometimes called "the town that refused to die." It sits close to Parícutin, one of the world's youngest volcanoes, and serves as the municipal seat of Nuevo Parangaricutiro in the Purépecha highlands.
