Nusaybin

One of the ancient world's most contested cities, Nusaybin sits on the Jaghjagh River at the foot of the Mount Izla escarpment in Mardin Province, southeastern Turkey, directly across the Syrian border from Qamishli. Known in antiquity as Nisibis, it served as capital of Roman Mesopotamia, a major trade entrepôt, and the seat of the influential School of Nisibis, founded in the 470s as a centre of Church of the East theology. The 4th-century baptistery of Saint Jacob, built in 359, survives alongside excavated remains of the early cathedral.
