Little fishing village on the north coast of Iceland's Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Ólafsvík sits where mountains meet the water and offers a handful of cafés and restaurants that punch above its size. It holds a notable place in Icelandic trading history: in 1687 it became the first settlement in Iceland to receive official trading rights from the Danish king, and it later grew into one of the country's busier commercial ports. Today the local economy runs on fishing and, increasingly, tourism.
