Ouro Preto
Ouro Preto · Brazil
This UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Serra do Espinhaço mountains of Minas Gerais, Ouro Preto is a former colonial gold-mining town whose Baroque churches, hilltop viewpoints, and walkable historic centre make it one of Brazil's most visited heritage destinations. Once known as Vila Rica, it served as the capital of Minas Gerais until 1897 and was among the most populous cities in Latin America during the 18th-century gold boom.
