Owerri, the capital of Nigeria's Imo State and the largest city in Igboland's heartland, has built a reputation as one of West Africa's liveliest cities after dark, with a dense spread of hotels, casinos, and leisure parks earning it the nickname "the Las Vegas of Africa." The Otamiri River borders the city to the east and the Nworie River to the south. Several major universities are based here, including the Federal University of Technology Owerri and Imo State University.
