Madhya Pradesh's only hill station, Pachmarhi sits high in the Satpura Range and has drawn visitors since 1857, when the British established it as a sanatorium and summer capital. The town lies entirely within the Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve, which links Satpura National Park with surrounding forest reserves, and nearby Dhupgarh is the highest point in Madhya Pradesh. The surrounding forests contain cave paintings estimated to be up to 10,000 years old.
