Palakkad Municipality
Palakkad · India
Palakkad Fort, captured and rebuilt by Hyder Ali in 1766 and later taken by the Zamorin in 1784, sits at the heart of this Kerala city on the Bharathappuzha River, its 18th-century battlements and moat still intact. The 15th-century Viswanatha Swamy Temple on the Kalpathy River hosts the Ratholsavam chariot festival. One of Kerala's oldest municipalities, established in 1866, Palakkad also holds Government Victoria College, founded in 1888, and is headquarters to one of India's oldest railway divisions.
