Sitting at the confluence of the Jinsha and Yalong Rivers in far southern Sichuan, Panzhihua is the only city in China named after a flower, and its tropical mountain climate has earned it the informal title "China Sunshine Flower City." Built across river-valley terrain during the Third Front construction era, it grew into a major steel, vanadium, and titanium production centre. Nearby draws include the Ertan Hydropower Station and the Gesala ecotourism area, while the city is also known for its mango and pomegranate harvests.
