Parauapebas

Parauapebas · Brazil

City in the Brazilian state of Pará that grew rapidly from almost nothing after the world's largest iron ore mine began production at the neighbouring Serra dos Carajás in the early 1980s, Parauapebas has since become one of the wealthiest cities in the northern region and a significant commercial hub for southeastern Pará. The frontier character of its origins still shapes the place, set against a backdrop of mountains and water.
