Each year on 16 July, the Fiesta de la Virgen del Carmen transforms this colonial town on the Paucartambo River into one of Peru's largest street festivals, drawing tens of thousands of visitors. The town's main square and streets are designated national historic monuments, and its predominantly colonial architecture reflects its long role as a trading hub between the Andes and the Amazon during both Inca and Spanish colonial periods.
