Founded in 1752 on the right bank of the Ishim River, Petropavl is a regional capital in northern Kazakhstan close to the Russian border, also known by its Kazakh name Kyzylzhar, meaning "Red cliff." The city sits in the forest-steppe zone of the Ishim plain and serves as a major transport hub connecting road, rail, river, and air routes across the region.
