Piratini
Brazil
Piratini, a town in Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul state, served as the first official capital of the Riograndense Republic — one of Latin America's earliest republican experiments — from its proclamation on 11 September 1836 until 1842. Founded by Azorean settlers in the late 18th century, it holds the Museu Histórico Farroupilha Barbosa Lessa, housed in the former republican government palace. Since May 2025, the town has also been designated the symbolic capital of Rio Grande do Sul on 20 September each year, when the state governor relocates there for the day.
