Poipet is Cambodia's main border crossing with Thailand, linking northwest Cambodia to Aranyaprathet and onward to Bangkok. Built specifically for border trade rather than growing from an older settlement, the city has expanded rapidly and sits on National Highway 5, which connects through Sisophon to Battambang and Phnom Penh; at Sisophon, a branch road leads to Siem Reap. For most travellers, Poipet functions as a transit point rather than a destination, and the city also has a well-documented casino economy along its border strip.
