Põltsamaa
Estonia
Põltsamaa, a little town in central Estonia on the Põltsamaa River, is the centre of Estonian wine production and home to a 13th-century castle whose surviving walls enclose St. Nicholas Church and several other buildings around a central square. First recorded in 1234, the town served as capital of the Livonian Kingdom from 1570 to 1578, and in the 18th century became a hub of the Enlightenment in northern Livonia, hosting the first private printing house in the Russian Empire and the first Estonian-language periodical.
