Known as Colombia's "white city" for its colonial-era buildings, Popayán is a mountain city in southwestern Colombia with a historic centre dense with churches — among them San Francisco, Santo Domingo, and the Catedral Basílica Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. UNESCO named it the world's first City of Gastronomy in 2005, and its Easter Week processions hold UNESCO Intangible Heritage status. The city has produced seventeen Colombian presidents and is home to the University of Cauca, founded in 1827.
