Port-Royal
Annapolis Royal · Canada
Founded in 1605, Port-Royal was the first successful permanent European settlement in what is now Canada and served as the capital of Acadia for most of its existence — a history now anchored in the modern town of Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia. Samuel de Champlain used it as his first base of exploration, and Louis Hébert introduced European agricultural practices here before moving to Quebec. The site sits on the Annapolis Basin, with Fort Anne marking the later phase of the settlement after 1629.
