Probolinggo
Indonesia
Coastal city on the north coast of East Java, Probolinggo is the main gateway for travellers heading to Mount Bromo, with the mountains rising close to the south. The city is known for its mangga manalagi mangoes, whose quality is credited to the angin gending — strong dry-season winds that blow through from July to September. It sits on the main Java–Bali highway and has a working fishing harbour, with a mixed Javanese and Madurese population and a history as a 19th-century sugar-refining centre.
