Puno's main draw is Lake Titicaca: this high-altitude city on the Peruvian altiplano sits on the lake's shore and serves as the departure point for the famous Uros floating islands and the outlying islands of Taquile and Amantaní. Founded in 1668 by the Viceroy of Peru, the city retains a historic centre with several colonial-era churches, and the Feast of the Virgen de la Candelaria was designated a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2014. The Bolivian border is also close, making Puno a regular stop on the South American overland route.
