This Pacific port city on a narrow spit of land facing the Nicoya Peninsula, Puntarenas has a walkable centre with a good spread of cafés and restaurants along the waterfront. Historically the most important port on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, it served as the country's main export gateway through the 19th and early 20th centuries and has drawn tourists since the 1940s. It also functions as a base for reaching other beaches and destinations along the Central Pacific coast.
