Putbus
Germany
Founded in 1810 by Prince Wilhelm Malte zu Putbus as a planned Classicist residence town, Putbus is the oldest seaside resort on the Baltic island of Rügen, with its district of Lauterbach credited as the site where sea bathing was introduced to Pomerania in 1816. The town's white-painted buildings — earning it the nickname "White Town" — were laid out to harmonise with the palace and its park, and a long-standing local custom requires rose bushes in front of every house, giving rise to a second nickname: "Rose Town."
