Quedlinburg

Quedlinburg's medieval old town, added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994, holds more than 2,100 timber-framed houses spanning eight centuries, making it one of Germany's largest protected historic areas. Situated just north of the Harz mountains in Saxony-Anhalt, the town was a seat of Ottonian royal power from the 10th century onward and remained home to a women's collegiate foundation for nearly 900 years. The castle hill, Romanesque collegiate church, cathedral treasury, and cobblestoned lanes of the old town are all part of the World Heritage designation, and the town is a stop on the Romanesque Road scenic route.
