Røros earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 1980 for its remarkably intact collection of 17th- and 18th-century wooden buildings, many still inhabited today, with dark pitch-log facades that give the town a medieval character. Known historically as Bergstaden — "the rock town" — it was one of only two Norwegian settlements formally designated a mining town, its identity shaped by centuries of copper extraction. The town sits along the river Hyttelva in mountain terrain, with a café and restaurant scene that outpaces the town's size.
