This compact town in the northern Rhodope mountains of Bulgaria, Rakitovo sits close to the Batak Reservoir and within easy reach of Velingrad. The surrounding area supports lavender, potato, and barley farming alongside a timber industry, and the Rhodope landscape offers mountain terrain in the wider region. A small Aromanian community also lives in the town.
