Real de Catorce
Catorce · Mexico
Once a booming silver-mining settlement high in the Sierra de Catorce of northern San Luis Potosí, Real de Catorce has reinvented itself as a destination after losing most of its population since the late 19th century. The village — known in the Huichol language as Wirikuta — draws both Catholic pilgrims and Huichol shamanists, and the surrounding high desert is increasingly used for horseback riding. It holds designation as one of Mexico's Pueblos Mágicos, and many of its old haciendas are being restored.
