Founded in 1513 by Vasco Porcallo de Figueroa, Remedios is Cuba's oldest Spanish settlement in the former Las Villas province and the birthplace of the Parrandas, a traditional festival considered among the Caribbean's largest and oldest. The town sits a short distance from Cuba's northern coast in Villa Clara province, with mountains nearby.
