Sitting on the banks of the Acre River in the far west of Brazil, Rio Branco is the capital of Acre state and the country's westernmost state capital. The city developed during the rubber boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when migrants from northeastern Brazil mixed with indigenous peoples and arrivals from Europe and the Middle East. It became the territorial capital in 1920 and state capital in 1962.
