Rivera
Uruguay
Rivera, in northern Uruguay, sits directly on the Brazilian border, merging almost seamlessly with the Brazilian city of Santana do Livramento to form a single walkable urban area. The border itself is the main draw: Uruguayans cross for cheaper goods on the Brazilian side, Brazilians head to Uruguayan duty-free shops, and visitors from elsewhere can use both. The boundary is marked only by low white posts, and it's possible to stand with one foot in each country — a genuinely unusual crossing point where Spanish, Portuguese, and the blended Portuñol are all in daily use.
