Romny
Ukraine
Romny sits on a high plateau where the Sula and Romen rivers meet on three sides, giving this northern Ukrainian city an unusually water-defined setting. Originally called Romen, it is the administrative centre of Romny Raion in Sumy Oblast and one of the region's leading industrial centres. The area also holds a place in Ukrainian energy history: oil was first extracted in Soviet Ukraine nearby, on Zolotukha Hill, in 1937.
