Saarlouis
Germany
Founded in 1680 by Louis XIV and designed by the military engineer Vauban, Saarlouis is a town on the Saar river in western Germany whose star-shaped fortifications still shape its layout today. Its French-inspired street plan and walkable centre, with a food-and-drink scene concentrated around the old town, reflect its origins as a frontier fortress. The town sits close to the borders of France and Luxembourg and is part of the cross-border SaarLorLux Euroregion.
