A former industrial town in the Loire department of central France, Saint-Chamond built its 19th-century prosperity on lace-making and steelworks, and is associated with Antoine Pinay, who governed the town for nearly half a century and led France in 1952. Sitting in the Gier valley and serving as a gateway to the Pilat regional nature park, it has a walkable centre with cafés and historic churches, and scenic surroundings close to the mountains.
