Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, a town in the Vosges department of northeastern France, holds a remarkable place in cartographic history: it was here, in 1507, that the Waldseemüller map was published containing the first recorded use of the word "America," named in honour of explorer Amerigo Vespucci. The town sits on the Meurthe river with a walkable centre of cafés and restaurants, and the surrounding Vosges hills offer scenic viewpoints. An annual International Geography Festival, founded in 1989, takes place each October.
