Founded in 1825 and known as the "city of light" for the poets, musicians, and writers Caldas has produced here, Salamina is a heritage town in Colombia's coffee-growing Caldas department. It holds the nickname "Mother of Nations" for its role as a founding base for several other Colombian cities. Named a Pueblo Patrimonio in 2010, it sits within the Coffee Cultural Landscape UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a compact centre of cafés and restaurants and mountain views in the surrounding landscape.
